What is a lay witness?

A lay witness is a person who provides testimony in a legal proceeding, such as a trial, but is not considered an expert in the subject matter. Lay witnesses are individuals who have personal knowledge of the events or actions they are testifying about and can provide relevant information to the case. They may be called to testify about what they saw, heard, or experienced in relation to the case. Lay witnesses are typically everyday citizens who have no formal training in law or the subject matter of the case, and they are sworn under oath to tell the truth. Their testimony can be used by the court to help determine the facts of a case.
